La Muette de Portici, Opéra Comique, Paris

Teatro - 09/04/2012

There?s strikingly strong theatre in this production of Auber?s rarely performed opera. Death by molten lava. That’s how Fenella, the mute girl of the title, is supposed to end it all: jumping out of a window as her brother is killed, the revolution fails and nearby Vesuvius erupts. Not only is Auber’s opera supposed to have triggered the uprising in Brussels that led to the creation of Belgium in 1830 but its spectacular denouement influenced Wagner’s ending to Götterdämmerung.
